7 Red Flags — Here's What Gives It Away
- 1. Sender domain (c2wv1cuh29.iwrw653so6.us) has no connection to McAfee ΓÇö legitimate McAfee emails come from @mcafee.com.
- 2. 'FINAL NOTICE' in all caps ΓÇö manufactured urgency designed to bypass rational thought.
- 3. Random ticket number (#72503721) appended to original subject line to appear official.
- 4. 'Multiple attempts to process your recurring payment' ΓÇö implies an existing subscription you may not recall having.
- 5. Sent to an address that may have no McAfee account linked to it whatsoever.
- 6. Username used as greeting instead of your real name.
- 7. Vague threat: 'permanent account closure' with no account details, order number, or subscription tier mentioned.
McAfee renewal and payment emails come exclusively from @mcafee.com. If you have a McAfee subscription, log in directly at mcafee.com ΓÇö never through a link in an email.
If you don't have a McAfee subscription, this email is entirely fabricated. The criminals are betting on the fact that many people have had McAfee at some point (it ships pre-installed on many Windows PCs) and may be uncertain whether they still have it. Windows or Mac inbuilt virus tools are more than sufficient for 99.9% of people if kept up to date with automatic updates.
